Today Kay had an appointment with the school district’s audiologist to check on her BAHA and make sure everything was working as it should.
The audiologist had Kay complete a few hearing tests with her BAHA on, and Kay did really well! For most of the sounds, she would look toward the direction the sound was coming from. Even when she wasn’t quite right, the audiologist still considered it a win because Kay was hearing the sound and attempting to figure out where it was coming from.
She explained that the sounds Kay hears through her BAHA aren’t quite the same as the sounds we hear naturally, which can make figuring out the exact direction of a sound a little more difficult for her. Knowing that helped put some things into perspective.
She also tested Kay with her BAHA off and headphones on, and Kay did well with that test too. She wasn’t always able to identify the exact direction of the sound, but she would at least attempt to look toward where she thought it was coming from.
The audiologist felt that Kay’s BAHA settings appeared to be correct and told me that if I ever feel like something needs to be adjusted or that something isn’t quite right with her BAHA, I can reach out to her. That was such a relief to hear, especially since getting in touch with Kay’s audiologist outside of school and getting an appointment can sometimes be a challenge.
Overall, I’d call it a successful appointment. Nothing major needed to be changed, Kay did a great job, and I left feeling a little more reassured about her hearing support at school.
And of course, we can’t forget the funniest part of the day.
I had to pick Kay up a little early from school for the appointment, and the ladies in the front office know her very well since the nurse’s office is right there. One of them radioed to Kay’s teacher: “Can I have Kay Kay to the front office for early release please?”
She made the announcement over the radio for the entire school to hear… then paused and started laughing.
“Did I really just say Kay Kay over the radio?”
Sometimes a nickname gets so ingrained that we don’t even realize we’re saying it anymore. HAH. Apparently, Kay Kay has officially made it onto the school-wide radio system.
