Today Kay received something that made both of us smile. A little while back, we entered an Omnipod giveaway and found out that Kay had won her very own copy of the Dyasonic: Sound Strength comic. It finally arrived, and seeing how excited she was to hold it in her hands made the moment even more special.
At first glance, it might seem like it’s “just a comic,” but to families like ours, it’s so much more than that.
Children deserve to see themselves represented in the stories they read, the shows they watch, and the heroes they look up to. For kids living with type 1 diabetes, seeing a character who wears an Omnipod helps normalize something that is part of their everyday life. Instead of feeling different or standing out because of a medical device, they get to see it as something that doesn’t limit them. They get to see a hero who looks a little more like them.
Representation matters because it builds confidence. It reminds children that they are capable, strong, and worthy of being the main character in their own story. Medical devices aren’t something to hide. They’re tools that help kids do amazing things while continuing to be exactly who they are.
As Kay grows up with type 1 diabetes, I hope she continues to find stories, books, and characters that help her feel seen. Moments like this may seem small, but they leave a lasting impact. They help shape how children see themselves and remind them that they belong.
