Lately, Kay and I have been struggling with managing her diabetes. I know that as a Type 1 Diabetic, her needs will constantly change, and one day, I’ll feel confident enough to make those adjustments on my own. Until then, I’m grateful she has such a supportive team at her endocrinologist’s office, always ready to help.
Recently, Kay’s blood sugar had been dropping multiple times a night—sometimes as often as three times—which has been exhausting for both of us. She’s so tired that when I wake her up to give her sugar, she barely opens her eyes. The only thing that gets her to sit up quickly? Asking if she wants fruit snacks—her favorite.
At first, I tried to fix the issue on my own, hoping the changes I made would help. But after several more nights of lows with no improvement, I decided it was time to call her doctor. Since multiple nighttime lows are urgent, we were able to get a telehealth appointment that same evening.
Moments like this remind me how grateful I am that I advocated for Kay and switched her doctors. Our first experience was terrible, but this doctor truly listens and does everything they can to help. After an hour on the phone and some adjustments to her ratios, I saw a huge difference—no more nightly lows!
I need to remind myself that it’s okay to ask for help. That’s exactly what her doctor is there for.
