The teacher meet and greet was another opportunity for Kay to get comfortable with her new school, classroom, and teacher before officially starting kindergarten. Even though Kay had thankfully already met her teacher during the Kinder Warm Up event, I still wanted to give her as many opportunities as possible to become familiar with everything she would be experiencing once school began.
When we walked into her classroom for the teacher meet and greet, Kay excitedly picked a chair and sat down as if she was already completely ready to start school. She looked so comfortable sitting there, and it was such a sweet little glimpse of the excitement she has for this new chapter.
Her teacher also shared something with us that meant so much to me. She informed me she had already learned that Kay is big on setting timers to help her understand when the next task or transition is coming. She then showed Kay that she had found her timer and placed it on the wall where Kay could easily see it.
That moment really proved to me just how important it was that Kay was able to attend Kinder Warm Up. It was not just about giving Kay the opportunity to become a little more familiar with her school or meet her teacher before the first day. It also gave her teacher the opportunity to learn even just a little bit about Kay before school officially began. And she did.
For a child like Kay, those little things can make such a big difference. Knowing that her teacher already understood something that helps Kay feel comfortable and prepared made my heart so happy. It reminded me that familiarity and preparation are not just helpful for Kay, but also give the people around her a chance to understand how she learns, communicates, and navigates her day.
Kay and her teacher are both new to the school this year, so I am sure they will have plenty of firsts together. There will probably be some challenges, lots of learning, and hopefully so many wonderful memories along the way.
I cannot wait to watch Kay blossom in her new classroom, grow in her independence, and make new friends. Kindergarten is already proving to be a pretty big adventure, and I am so excited to see where this year takes her.
