Kay’s first day of school looks a little different this year. Instead of walking her up to the building and handing her off to the teachers, I got to follow kay inside and hang with her while she ate her breakfast and follow up with an insulin shot before taking myself back home.
Typically, the school nurse would handle that task. But because we only had 3 days before school started to get things figured out, I had to step in as a nurse was not going to be at the school the first day.
Advocating for your child sometimes means you must be patient and step in when needed. I was originally told a nurse would only be there two days a week and that I’d have to come in the other days and give kay her insulin. I of course said I’d do that if I absolutely needed to, but only while they found another solution and luckily a solution was found.
This year makes me a bit nerves with diabetes being kay’s new sidekick. But it helps that kay’s only at school for 2 1/2 hours. Plus, both of Kays teachers are incredibly and the school overall has always shown their support since the day they first met kay.
So, here’s to a new year. Kays first full school year. Let it be a great one!
