Kay recently had her three-month checkup with her endocrinologist, and it was so funny to see how much she remembered about the routine! As soon as they called us back from the waiting room, she walked straight over to the mat to get her height measured—fun fact: she’s exactly three feet tall now! Hehe. Then, she confidently stepped onto the scale to be weighed before heading to the exam room to wait for her doctor.
I’m incredibly grateful for Kay’s endocrinology team. Even though our checkups are every three months, I’ve had to call them countless times in between. Whether it’s a quick phone consultation or a telehealth visit, they are always available to guide me and ensure I’m doing everything I can for Kay.
During this visit, when the doctor came in to check on Kay and review her chart, she took a moment to show Kay her stethoscope, letting her listen to both her own heartbeat and mine. Kay thought that was so much fun!
Having a supportive medical team makes such a difference. Kay’s first endocrinologist was not as accessible, which was incredibly difficult as a mom navigating a new Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis for a toddler. You need a team that listens, supports, and helps—rather than one that dismisses your concerns.
Before having Kay, I wasn’t as assertive as I am today. I used to stay quiet and let things happen, even when I had concerns. But motherhood has taught me the importance of speaking up, even for the smallest issues, because advocating for your child (and yourself) is so important.
I’m still learning every day—figuring out the best ways to manage Kay’s diabetes and keep her as healthy and happy as possible. I know it’s a journey, and it takes time. But having a team that truly supports us makes all the difference, and for that, I’m beyond grateful.
