As I reflect on this past year, it’s hard to believe how much has happened. We started the year with a minor car accident, which led to getting my car repaired and eventually upgrading to a safer, more reliable vehicle for Kay and me. Unfortunately, just a few days after getting the new car, it was hit in a parking lot by an unknown driver while Kay and I were in a store. Thankfully, it was repairable, and I had it back within a week.
The most significant event of the year, however, was Kay’s Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis. It was completely unexpected and has been a much bigger adjustment for our family than receiving Kay’s Down Syndrome diagnosis when I was pregnant. These days, with new doctors or hospital visits, I almost forget to mention that Kay has Down Syndrome because my focus has shifted to managing her Type 1 Diabetes.
Kay also experienced her first hospital stay since her diagnosis due to a nasty stomach flu that has been making its rounds everywhere. While hospital visits are never easy, I’m glad her doctor and I decided it was the best place for her. Kay was dehydrated and couldn’t keep anything down, so caring for her at home wasn’t an option. The hospital stay ensured she received the fluids and care she needed to recover.
Despite the challenges, we’ve had some wonderful moments this year. As we close out the year, I’ve done my share of reflecting, wondering if I’m doing right by Kay and myself. But that’s natural. All we can do is take things one day at a time. I hope that whatever you’ve been through this year, you’ve stopped to celebrate the good moments. Here’s to a New Year filled with everything you want and deserve. Happy New Year!
