Kay’s school recently hosted another family engagement activity for the pre-K kiddos, and this time we got to build our very own gingerbread house! We had much better luck decorating this second gingerbread house compared to our first attempt last week. Despite the fact that Kay is always on the move and rarely likes to sit in one spot for long, she did a great job assisting with the decorations.
Earlier this week, I had a conversation with Kay’s occupational therapist, who asked if Kay is able to sit for at least five minutes and focus on a single activity. I couldn’t help but chuckle as I answered honestly: no, not quite yet. Kay is a girl who loves to stay busy, constantly moving from one task to the next. At home, we have several puzzles and other fun learning toys that I’d love to sit down and work on with her, but she hasn’t shown much interest in them so far. I remind myself that these things take time. While Kay is turning four this month, her attention span isn’t quite at the level of a typical four-year-old just yet. I have no doubt she’ll get there in her own time, and when she does, I’ll be ready to enjoy those fun activities together.
During the gingerbread house activity, the principal and vice principal stopped by, and Kay was so excited to see them! The principal mentioned how much he misses Kay’s presence on Fridays when she isn’t at school, sharing how he loves it when she stops greets him every morning in the cafeteria during breakfast. Moments like these make me so grateful for Kay’s school. They consistently go above and beyond to organize family engagement activities throughout the year, giving kids the opportunity to do something fun with their parents while fostering a sense of community. Kay and I can’t wait to see what the next activity will be!
