After several months of managing Kay’s diabetes with the Omnipod 5, we’re now in the process of hopefully switching to the Tandem Mobi—and we’re genuinely excited about the possibilities. The Mobi is currently the smallest insulin pump on the market, about half the size of a credit card, which makes it perfect for Kay’s tiny frame and busy, on-the-go lifestyle. One of the most promising things we’ve heard from other parents is that the infusion set insertion with the Tandem system is often reported to be less painful than what many experience with the Omnipod 5. For a young child like Kay, that could make site changes far less stressful. The Mobi can be worn on or off the body, which gives us more flexibility with her comfort and sensory needs. While some shy away from tubing, I actually see it as a benefit—it allows for site changes without moving the whole pump and even lets us temporarily disconnect the pump for baths and swimming. That means no more bulky pod bump to worry about during water play, and less anxiety about pump failures from being submerged too long—something we’ve unfortunately experienced with the Omnipod. Another game-changer is that boluses and insulin delivery can be controlled directly from an iPhone using the t:connect app, so I can discreetly manage her insulin without having to rely on a separate device or interrupt her play. The pump also uses Control-IQ technology to automatically adjust insulin based on her Dexcom CGM readings, offering extra protection from highs and lows—especially overnight or during active moments. With its USB-C charging (no more tossing pods every three days!), seamless Dexcom integration, and real-time remote monitoring, the Tandem Mobi feels thoughtfully designed for kids and caregivers alike.
Last summer, we barely went swimming because I was constantly worried Kay’s insulin pump would fail after just 30 minutes in the water—even though it’s marketed as waterproof. Unfortunately, we’ve learned the hard way that when a pump fails, getting a replacement isn’t always quick or easy. The wait can be stressful, especially knowing we’re limited in how many we’re allowed to have on hand, which puts us at risk of running out. That’s a scary position to be in when your child depends on this technology every single day. We’re hopeful the Tandem Mobi will be a better fit for Kay’s next chapter. For now, we’re waiting to hear back from Tandem on whether her medical insurance will approve the switch.
