Watching Kay at her final pre-k performance feels like one of those moments you wish you could freeze in time forever. It was beautiful, emotional, and honestly a little hard on my mama heart. Sitting there watching her sing and participate so confidently, I couldn’t help but think back to her very first pre-k program two years ago and realize just how far she has come.
At that first performance, Kay sat quietly on the lap of her teacher’s aide. She needed hand-over-hand assistance to participate in the songs and movements, and she didn’t show much interest or expression throughout the program. At the time, I remember wondering what future performances would look like for her and hoping she would continue to grow in confidence and independence.
Fast forward to this year’s program, and there she was — standing proudly beside the very same incredible teacher’s aide who helped guide her through that first performance years ago. Only this time, Kay wasn’t relying on hand-over-hand assistance. She knew what she was doing. She participated happily, followed along with the songs and motions, and showed so much joy while doing it. Seeing that transformation right in front of me brought tears to my eyes almost instantly.
As a parent, moments like these hold so much meaning. The progress may seem small to some people looking from the outside, but to us, it represents years of hard work, patience, encouragement, therapies, learning, and growth. Watching Kay blossom into the little girl she is becoming fills me with so much pride.
At the same time, it’s bittersweet in every possible way. I’m so incredibly happy seeing how much she has accomplished, but there’s also this ache that comes with realizing how quickly childhood moves. My little girl is growing up. Pre-k is over, and next year she’ll be heading to a completely different school for kindergarten. That change alone brings so many emotions with it — excitement, nerves, sadness, and hope all mixed together.
After the performance, all of the families gathered outside in the courtyard to take pictures, hug teachers, and spend time together before heading home. It was one of those simple moments you know you’ll look back on years from now. Kids running around laughing, parents snapping photos nonstop, teachers being thanked for all they’ve done, and everyone soaking in the final moments of the school year together.
I’ll always be grateful for the teachers, aides, and staff who helped shape Kay during her pre-k years. They believed in her, encouraged her, celebrated every milestone, and helped give her the confidence to shine. Watching her final pre-k performance reminded me that progress doesn’t always happen overnight, but when you look back, the growth can be absolutely incredible.
And while it’s hard saying goodbye to this chapter, I can’t wait to see all the amazing things Kay will continue to accomplish next.
