Kay and I recently had the chance to attend a new program at GiGi’s Playhouse called Destination Discovery—and we had such a great time! This fun and relaxed program is all about learning through purposeful play. It’s designed to support a wide range of skills in kids, including fine and gross motor development, social interaction, and language, all through engaging peer-to-peer activities.

This week’s theme was Jungle Adventure—so you can imagine how excited Kay was! The space was transformed with fun obstacle courses, complete with balance beams, a slide, and even a cozy couch she could bounce on (which might’ve been just as fun for the parents watching too!). But by far, Kay’s favorite part was the colorful floor dots. She loved hopping from one to the next like she was on a mission, and I couldn’t help but smile watching her.

Jumping is no small feat for Kay. Because of her lower muscle tone, physical tasks like this can be more challenging—but that’s what makes moments like these so special. Lately, we’ve seen a big improvement in her jumping skills, and the pride she feels when she lands each one is written all over her face. As a parent, seeing your child meet a physical milestone they’ve been working toward is incredibly rewarding.

Programs like this are also a gentle reminder of how every child learns differently. Fully structured environments can sometimes be tough for Kay and many of her peers. Sitting still and waiting for the next instruction isn’t always easy when you’re full of energy and curiosity! But these are important life skills—like learning patience and following directions—that we continue to work on together. I try to help Kay understand that sometimes we do have to pause, take turns, and wait our turn… even when it’s hard. And every time she tries, that’s a win too.

I’m so grateful for spaces like GiGi’s Playhouse that allow our kids to learn, grow, and just be themselves—while building essential skills in ways that are developmentally appropriate and fun. We’re looking forward to more jungle jumps, couch bounces, and everything in between.
