June 6th marked a monumental day in our household — Kay’s 1-year diaversary.

While some may not see this as a day to celebrate, we do. Because one year ago, our lives changed forever. This date marks the beginning of a journey that reshaped how we eat, sleep, play, travel, and think. Every decision became more calculated. Every routine, more intentional.

But more than anything, it marks 365 days of learning, growing, advocating, adjusting — and showing up for Kay in ways we never imagined we’d need to.

We stepped into an entirely new world — one of insulin, sensors, carb counting, alarms, and sleepless nights with 2 a.m. blood sugar checks. A world we knew nothing about, but one we were determined to navigate for her.

In the past year, we’ve:

Given hundreds of insulin doses

Tracked thousands of blood sugar readings

Changed more than 35 sensors

Counted every single gram of carbs that passed her lips

Cried, advocated, researched, learned — and loved harder than ever

Because diabetes doesn’t take a day off. And neither do we.

Yet through it all, Kay kept being Kay — brave, bold, funny, fierce, and full of life. She’s learned how to live with Type 1, but more importantly, she’s shown us how to thrive with it

To our tiny warrior: you are so much more than your diagnosis

And to all the other T1D families — especially those just starting out — please know: you are not alone

We’ve climbed mountains this year. And we’ve made it over every single one.

To celebrate this milestone, Kay enjoyed a (lower-carb) cupcake with one candle — marking one year of courage, one year of resilience, and one year of finding our way in this new world.

This past year has been anything but easy — but today, we choose to honor the strength, community, and light that have come from the hardest of beginnings.

Here’s to one year of strength. One year of growth. One year of resilience.
