Kay and I had another special visit from our local news station—Fox 5! It was such a memorable morning filming at home, and this time, Maeve and her trainer joined us for the interview! I’m incredibly grateful to both Fox 5 and Diabetic Alert Dogs of America for continuing to share our story, and to all our friends, family, and community members for the outpouring of love and support. We truly feel it, and we’re so thankful.
During filming, I brought out one of Kay’s high blood sugar scent jars just for a little behind-the-scenes moment. Maeve’s trainer gave her a quick sniff of the jar—and to our amazement, she began alerting! Maeve hasn’t officially started scent training yet, but she’s been passively exposed to high and low scent samples while her trainer works with another dog. It’s so encouraging to see her natural curiosity and excitement, which her trainer is thrilled about and continues to nurture.
I was especially glad Maeve’s trainer was there to share her perspective on the training process. She talked about how every dog is trained not only with core diabetic alert skills, but also with the individual needs and lifestyle of their future handler in mind. Maeve has already had a variety of experiences—visiting playgrounds, trampoline parks, and even exploring the Las Vegas Strip!
After the interview, Maeve got to meet her future pup-mates Charlie and Zoey, and they hit it off just as I’d hoped! Maeve is expected to finish her access training in the coming weeks and then begin scent work at her own pace. We’re fully supportive of letting her move through this process in the way that’s best for her—and we’re so excited for everything that lies ahead.
I’ll be sure to share the news story on Kay’s Instagram once it airs, so stay tuned!
