We recently had another three month follow-up appointment with Kay’s endocrinologist, and like most of these visits, it came with a mix of emotions.

Endocrinology appointments are never just “routine” for us. They’re a snapshot of everything we’ve been navigating behind the scenes—the highs, the lows (literally), the adjustments, the sleepless nights, the second-guessing, and all the small wins in between.

Walking into this appointment, I felt that familiar combination of hope and nervousness. You never quite know how everything is going to look on paper compared to how it feels day to day.

We went over Kay’s numbers, patterns, and overall management, and something I always try to remind myself of is that diabetes is never static—especially in kids. What worked a few weeks ago can suddenly stop working, and sometimes there’s no clear explanation why. We’ve seen that firsthand recently.

Between growth, daily activity, and even things like minor illnesses, Kay’s blood sugars have had their moments of unpredictability. There have been days where everything feels steady and manageable… and others where I feel like I’m constantly chasing numbers and trying to stay one step ahead. It can be exhausting.

During the appointment, we talked through some of those patterns—what we’ve been seeing, what’s been working, and where things have felt a little more challenging. Adjustments were made (as they usually are), and we came up with a plan moving forward that feels both realistic and supportive for where Kay is right now.

One thing I really appreciate is having a care team that understands that this isn’t just about numbers. It’s about Kay as a whole—her routines, her comfort, her quality of life, and what’s actually sustainable for us as a family. Because at the end of the day, perfect numbers aren’t the goal. Safe, supported, and thriving is.

Something else that doesn’t get talked about enough is the mental load that comes with these appointments. You’re not just reviewing data—you’re reliving it. Every high, every low, every moment you questioned if you handled something the “right” way. And if I’m being honest, that part can be heavy.

But it’s also a reminder of how much care goes into this every single day. How much attention, love, and effort it takes to manage something that never takes a break.

Kay, of course, handled the appointment like she always does—just being her sweet, resilient self. She may not fully understand everything that’s going on, but she shows up, she adapts, and she keeps going in a way that constantly amazes me.

We left the appointment with a clearer plan, a few tweaks to try, and a renewed sense of confidence moving forward. And that’s really all you can ask for.

These appointments aren’t about perfection—they’re about progress. About learning, adjusting, and continuing to show up, even on the hard days.

And we’ll keep doing exactly that.
