Over the weekend we made a visit to one of our favorite hidden gems in Las Vegas, the McKee Ranch.

We’ve visited the ranch before, but this trip felt a little more meaningful. We wanted to stop by and show our support because the ranch is currently facing pressure from local animal control that could impact the public’s ability to visit and interact with the animals.

For many families in our city, McKee Ranch isn’t just a place with animals. It’s something truly special in a city that doesn’t have many places like it.

The ranch has been welcoming families for decades. McKee Ranch Foundation operates as a nonprofit animal rescue and sanctuary where visitors can see and interact with farm animals like horses, goats, pigs, chickens, rabbits, and more. Unlike most places in Las Vegas, the ranch gives kids the chance to experience something simple but meaningful — feeding animals, walking through a ranch, and learning about farm life.

Families can visit during the day to feed the animals (pro tip: bring carrots!), explore the property, and simply enjoy being around animals in a relaxed environment. The ranch has also hosted pony rides, seasonal events, and community gatherings over the years, making it a place where many local families have created memories.

Beyond being a place for families to visit, the ranch also serves an important purpose behind the scenes. As a nonprofit organization, it provides a safe home for rescued animals that might otherwise have nowhere to go.

In a fast-growing city like Las Vegas, spaces like this are becoming harder and harder to find.

We had such a fun time walking around and visiting all the animals. There’s something really special about seeing kids light up when they get to feed a goat or see a giant horse up close.

This time we also brought Maeve along with us — Kay’s diabetic alert dog — and she did amazing.

Fun fact: the organization we got Maeve from, Diabetic Alert Dogs of America, actually brings their dogs in training to McKee Ranch as part of the training process.

Service dogs have to learn how to stay focused in all kinds of environments, including around animals they may not encounter often. Every family lives a different life, and trainers want these dogs to be prepared for anything.

Because you never know when a service dog might suddenly find itself standing next to a giant horse, and Maeve handled it like a total pro.

Las Vegas is known for bright lights, casinos, and entertainment, but it doesn’t have many places where families can simply spend time outdoors with animals. McKee Ranch gives kids experiences they might not otherwise have — feeding farm animals, seeing horses up close, learning about animals and nature, and spending time outside as a family.

For many kids, this may be their first chance to experience something like that. Places like this create memories.

Right now the ranch is facing challenges related to regulations involving animals on the property, and many members of the community have begun speaking up because they want to protect the ranch and the animals that live there.

During our visit we signed the online petition to help keep McKee Ranch around so families can continue enjoying this special place for years to come.

Places like this matter. They matter to the animals that have a safe home there. They matter to the volunteers who care for them. And they matter to families like ours who value the chance to slow down, step away from the city for a moment, and let our kids experience something real.

Our city needs more places like McKee Ranch — not fewer.
