On Tuesday, I completed training for Kay’s newest insulin pump, the Tandem Mobi! The trainer was surprised at how quickly I picked it up, mentioning that most people need more than an hour, but I wrapped it up in just about sixty minutes. I explained that, before any new situation, I try to be as prepared as possible.
I’d already been following several families on social media who use the Mobi, watching their pump change-day videos to see exactly how it works. Plus, Tandem sent us a demo Mobi so I could practice and see how Kay would tolerate it. That little bit of hands-on experience made a huge difference on training day.
The Mobi definitely has more moving parts than Kay’s previous pump. Her old one was all-in-one: I just filled it with insulin, placed it on her, and started it from her phone. The Mobi requires swapping out several different components, and I also have to disconnect it occasionally to charge, something I do during Kay’s bath time since it takes less than 30 minutes to fully charge.
I had read that the Mobi tends to be a little more aggressive with insulin delivery, so I was prepared for frequent lows in the beginning. Instead, we’ve had the opposite, higher blood sugars. Thankfully, I was able to tweak some of her settings, and I’m hopeful we’ll start seeing better results.
With school starting soon, I’m looking forward to seeing how the Mobi supports Kay’s blood sugars throughout the day, especially while she’s in class. Fingers crossed this pump will make things a little easier for both of us this year.
