Kay recently had her yearly bloodwork done, which is always a stressful time for both of us. She already goes through so much every day with finger pokes and site changes, so adding a blood draw on top of everything can feel like a lot. Still, the importance of these labs—especially with her having both Down syndrome and Type 1 Diabetes—far outweighs the momentary struggles we face.
Because Kay lives with both conditions, there are several medical reasons why routine bloodwork is critical. Individuals with Down syndrome are at a higher risk for hypothyroidism, and those with Type 1 Diabetes also face increased risk due to autoimmune factors. Kay is also screened regularly for Celiac disease, which is more common in both Down syndrome and Type 1 and can have serious implications if left undiagnosed.
We also check for nutrient deficiencies, as people with Down syndrome often experience issues with nutrient absorption, and diabetes can make this even more complicated. Liver function tests help monitor for autoimmune-related concerns, and a CBC (complete blood count) screens for anemia and other hidden issues. An autoimmune panel may be done as well to catch conditions like Addison’s disease, which are more prevalent in children like Kay. And of course, she gets her A1C checked with her endocrinologist to assess her long-term blood sugar control.
I do my best to stay on top of all the labs Kay needs and pay close attention to any new symptoms that arise. If something is even slightly flagged on her bloodwork, I’m on the phone with her doctor to make sure it’s reviewed. I know how important it is to advocate for her and make sure nothing gets missed.
Honestly, I’m not nearly as diligent with my own health—but I’m working on it. I’ve realized that in order to take care of Kay the way she deserves, I also need to take care of myself.
After we got home from the lab, I gave Kay a much-deserved treat—an ice cream bar! I recently found a lower-carb strawberry-flavored option at Whole Foods, and she loved it, which makes me so happy. I want Kay to enjoy the same little joys as any other kid—because she is just that, a kid who deserves treats and fun and celebration. Finding lower-carb alternatives feels like a win-win!
