Kay recently had her six-month checkup with her audiologist! For those who don’t know, Kay was born with severe hearing loss in her right ear. To help with this, she wears a BAHA (bone-anchored hearing aid) that allows sound from her left ear to travel to her right. Technology has come so far, and in a few years, a cochlear implant might be an option for Kay. For now, though, she uses her BAHA headband (when she’s in the mood—toddlers, right?), and it helps improve her hearing.
I never quite know what to expect at these appointments. Sometimes, we just check in with the audiologist, who updates Kay’s BAHA and asks how often she’s wearing it. Other times, like today, we find ourselves in the sound room. This is where the audiologist plays sounds to see how Kay responds and whether she looks in the direction the sound is coming from. Today, they also tested her left ear just to confirm her hearing is still good in that ear.
Kay, understandably, isn’t a fan of having things placed in her ears, but with some gentle coaxing, she managed to get through it. Thankfully, the test confirmed that her left ear is functioning perfectly, just as we suspected! We were given the all-clear and scheduled our next checkup in six months.
